Connotation & Denotation

At that lesson we learned a lot about two ways of giving labels to things in order to classify them and to make clearer the meaning we are trying to convey.
Denotation is using a name or label to evoke the meaning that word has, but connotation is using word or name to evoke personal memories. So denotative refers to an actual process, while connotative refers to the meaning associated with ehat we see. We disscussed different advertisments to see what editors wanted us to see and think about while looking at it.

Prelim video

Our is not as good as we expected. It may be the awfullest of all the prelims, but we will try hard to improve all the flaws of our work and make the Course work video excellent.
As you see, our main problems were with lightning and editing. It looked good in the camera screen, but not at the TV or Computer )The lights are too bright, And we struggled with editing because didn't make the shooting in the right way.We didn't manage to make it look clear, and confused a bit with a camera. However, now we are ready to face next work. First experience is not always excellent, we are learning on our mistakes!=)
P.S. Anyway, our video is very popular!!!

This week we started editing our prelim task. It doesn't look like we supposed it to be, but anyway we'll try to make it better. We noticed all our mistakes and now we know what should we do in course work video. There are loads of problems with lights and it's our fault but first thing is always messy, it's good maybe, because then we'll see complete difference between first shooting and the last.

Prelim Task.

It was the first wark we used to do with out teacher or any help of professianls at all. We were randomly divided into groups of 4 and 3 people in each. I worked with Henry and Sola, we invented a little script based on the script we were given, it was a story about two guys, one of whome persuaded antoher to pour hot water out of the cup. We found a place for shooting it, it was a cafeteria. We discussed everything step by step, and divided the duties, boys were working as actors while I was oding a job of a cameraman. Only after starting up  the shooting we understood what a difficult job it is. We couldn’t concentrate on sequence of cuts, and worried a lot about how it’s going to be look like at the end. Hope we made everything we could for our prelim task not to be like mess. A thrilling work in groups gives us desire to continue filming. I’m looking forward to see the result.

Camera lesson and first shoot.

I’ve found out about using a camera, how it works, and wha basis you need to do, to shoot something. We worked with cameras , and tried to shoot. It was a little clip, consisted of 5 shot that showed us how girl is coming to take a book, lying on the floor. We made mistakes, and finally saw that it was funny, stupid piece of shots with no sense.

Shot sizes and different cuts.

The lesson about about big amount of different types of shot sizes, their meaning and motivation. What kind of shot you need to use for evoking special feelings from people. How do you want people to see your character. Also we found out a lot about Cross cut, jumo cut and reaction cut, these are three cuts editors use to control perception of events. We watched a piece of old horror film «Don’t look now» and tried to mention all kinds of montage editors used to influence on our thoughts.
Here are some examples:
.

Medium close-up- head and shoulders.Useful all-around shot.
Big close-up - used to show emotions and details. Reserved for
passion and conflict.

Point of view(POV) shot - perspective from a particular character's point of view. The director manipulates whose eyes the audience experiencxes the story from.
Wide shot(establishing shot) - Shows us location, often used at the beginning and at the end of the scene.

Over the shoulder(O/S) - Helps create a dynamic between the character and what they are seeing.
