Evaluating the storyboard and animatics

History: Up until just a few years ago, animatics were produced by filming or videotaping storyboards. Over the last ten years, animatic production has become much more sophisticated. Animatics are now produced with the aid of computer animation (2D or 3D), with special visual effects once reserved for high-end Hollywood productions.

In general: Animatics are animated storyboards. They are used for various purposes depending on the medium for which they are being produced. Animatics are used every day in the advertising industry to test commercials. They're used to preview scenes of live-action films before they are shot. You'll also find animatics in the pre-production stages of animation and in the video game industry.

What we have learned from the animcatic? What do we need to do? How does it help us?
  • Our animatics were made of approximately 120 storyboard shots, each shot was filmed for 10 seconds. The only thing we need is to add the music to put it on the filmings, and edit it all up together.

  • Animatics adds to the most approximate picture of what is going to be in our final piece. That really helps us, as we can work out what we need to add or change. Additionally, we can clearly see how the idea works and looks overall, and if it is going to work in real. However, it was a very time-consuming process, as our track has a very repetitively quick beat which needs to have swapping of the shots quickly, so we had a repeat a lot of them.

  • The help of Final Cut pro as a part of digital technology we were using during the animatics is very important and irreplaceable.

  • We decided to add the social problem image to our piece. As you can see clearly from the storyboard and animatic, girls are gradually taking make up off. We want to show that every person is beautiful in in it natural way, and make up, parties etc is not real, not what your personality really is.

  • Animatic and storyboard is nice example of what actually is going to be in a real MV. We clearly see that runway idea is not going to work, as it is very difficult to make it look realistic, therefore we decided to do a photo shooting instead, that is going to be even more glamorous, and less issues with similar costumes are going to be met.
